Somehow, we've made it this far

a mood board

Morning darklings,

A gripe about National Unicorn Day before the mood board today.

I was thrilled to find out that the 9th was a day to celebrate unicorns! What a world we live in that we have a day for everything. It’s ridiculous, unnecessary, but also super needed in times like these.

The hubs wanted to know what it was all about. He was, of course, being sarcastic. Still, I looked up a few articles to read to him.

They said what one would expect: it’s a day we celebrate the majestic beast known as the unicorn. For some reason, they all kept calling unicorns mythical or saying they were not real. A choice.

But then, they had suggestions on how to celebrate.

Darklings, I cannot express my disappointment.

  1. Dress like a unicorn.

  2. Eat and drink unicorn themed foods and drinks.

  3. Decorate your house with unicorn things.

  4. Do crafts with the theme unicorn.

  5. Watch unicorn movies.

I don’t know about you, but that says birthday party to me. And that is annoying.

My only option to celebrate a Nationally recognized day meant to celebrate the most amazing creature ever is to have… a birthday party? Where most of the decor would be bought in the children’s section or handmade?

Where is the adult content? And no, I’m not talking ponyplay.

So, I present a better way to celebrate National Unicorn Day (late, but it is what it is). I also suggest we take this idea and put it forward to other such National days as National Mother Goose Day on May 1 or National Smarties Day on October 2nd.

  1. Dress in a way that makes you feel pretty or magical or like the treat that you are.

  2. Consume foods that fit the theme of the day if you want to, if you can, if that’s something you want to put effort into.

Here’s where things get bigger.

  1. Social groups and neighbors get together and discuss your favorite movies, favorite flavors, or favorite stories.

  2. Colleges and libraries host free lectures about the origins of the day’s topic (mythology, unicorns: real or no, candy throughout the ages, how storytelling was shaped by Mother Goose tales, etc.).

  3. Colleges and movie theaters have a double feature of movies related to the National day—candy, stories, unicorns, etc. In between the films, they have a lively discussion about the film itself, the themes of both the day and others they saw throughout. Or hell, make it an all day 5 movie thing.

What I’m saying is, do better?

In our world that’s imploding, how about we find reasons to get together as a community? While we’re there, let’s think and laugh and discuss and learn. I’m not saying anyone needs to take notes, but working your brain is good for you. And right now, we need people to be able to focus up. Take the day to wear a unicorn horn at a lecture, then go conquer the world with a lighter heart in the morning.

And yeah, she’s a Krampus, but whatever. Isn’t it basically December?

questions of the week

(trying them lower today, as they require less scrolling to answer this way)

  1. Do you know marble runs? They are a whole thing. See here. Brills, no?

  2. What kind/color marble would you be?

  3. What’s one scary thing you did recently?

my answers of the week

  1. I found out a few years ago but lost touch with it. When I remembered it, I dove back in. I have favorites and shout at the TV when they win or lose. How do we feel about calling it a sport?

  2. Something magical like this rainbow one.

  1. I talked to my therapist. It’s not scary most days, but sometimes, it just really is. But the good kind—like a skyscraper high roller coaster in the dark.

Until next time.
